Автобус №2 – один из самых первых появившихся в Саратове.

В 1960-х он соединял Предмостовую площадь и Крытый рынок (Вавилова – Астраханнская – Соколовая), и позднее, в 1974-75 был заменён маршрутом № 25.

Указан на схеме 1979 года (Пл. Дружбы ЧССР и СССР – Крытый рынок). По состоянию на 1986 год маршрут обозначен как экспресс (2-э), в подобном режиме он проработал до 1997 года, когда после «снятия» трамваев №№ 1 и 15 снова переведён в разряд обычных маршрутов, со всеми остановками.

После введения маршрута № 2Д (Пл. Дружбы – пос. Юбилейный) маршрут 2 иногда указывается как 2К, хотя официально продолжает носить номер 2.
